HistoryFounded in 1976, The Cambridge University Industrial Society, as it was then known, brought together a small group of students who were keen to explore the possible directions for their lives once they had graduated. Realising that a degree from Cambridge alone would no longer guarantee post-university employment, the founders hoped to promote career awareness among their peers. The group sought advice on how to build their CVs and invited speakers from different industries to come to Cambridge and offer information on attaining a career. Within two years the society’s membership had expanded tremendously and it was approached by the nationwide careers NGO, The Careers Research and Advisory Centre (CRAC), to help promote careers skills for students at universities across the UK. With its roots in Cambridge, the CRAC was ideally placed to work with the Cambridge University Industrial Society to advance the careers education of students in Cambridge and beyond. Today there are over 35 student members of CRAC nationwide, working to help students develop rewarding careers. With support from a large number of affiliate companies, the charity itself runs careers skills development courses and broad activity-based programmes across the UK. Solely and independently run by Cambridge University students, the Cambridge Industrial Society continues to excel as one of the most innovative student careers societies in the country. In2002, the society was renamed ‘Cambridge Futures’ to reflect its expanding focus and activities. Continually changing to meet the modernising needs of graduates and employers, Cambridge Futures now works alongside the CRAC and the Cambridge University Careers Service to present a weekly programme of helpful and interesting careers events which bring the foremost speakers and leading graduate recruiters to Cambridge University. Now the second largest society in Cambridge, with well over 3,000 members, Cambridge Futures expects to build on almost three decades of experience to help provide valuable student careers guidance for years to come. |
